Lehigh Valley Health Network offers a fully accredited five-year general surgery residency of four categorical positions. Upon completing the program, the graduate will be qualified to practice independently and will be eligible for board certification in general surgery. About one-third of our graduates pursue further specialty training in vascular surgery, colon and rectal surgery, cardiothoracic surgery, plastic surgery, or surgical critical care. The remainder enter the practice of general surgery.
The general surgery residency provides a diverse clinical experience in all components of general surgery. The curriculum includes: basic science, surgical pathology/radiology, journal club, visiting professor lectures, surgical grand rounds, mortality & morbidity conference, and tumor board conferences. Protected time for educational conferences provides a balance between the education and service aspects of residency training.
To comply with the new 80-hour workweek requirement, a night-float system has been established. Our resident staff developed the system currently in place. Physician assistants have been hired to work with the residents.
Participation in a clinical research project during the course of training adds to the educational experience. There are resources within the department of surgery and in the institution to assist residents with their projects. The general surgery residents at Lehigh Valley Health Network have a long history of clinical research resulting in articles published in peer-reviewed journals and presentations at national and regional meetings, for which they have won numerous awards. Funding is provided to residents to attend regional or national educational conferences. Additional funding is available to residents presenting papers or posters.
A single three-year designated preliminary position is available for individuals pursuing plastic surgery training in a combined format (3+3).
